Canada’s New Rules For International Students (2024)

December 11, 2023

December 11th, Canada:

Canada is one of the popular destinations for Indian students for several reasons such as:

  • High-quality education: Canadian universities consistently rank among the best in the world, offering various programs and research opportunities. Canadian degrees are recognised and respected by employers around the world.
  • Affordable tuition fees: Compared to other English-speaking countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, tuition fees in Canada are significantly lower. Numerous scholarships and financial assistance options are accessible to students. Additionally, you can work part-time while pursuing your studies in Canada.
  • Post-graduation work opportunities: Canada offers a post-graduation work permit program that allows international students to gain valuable work experience in their field after graduation.
  • Quality of life: Canada consistently ranks highly as one of the world’s best countries.

Recently, Canada revised its policy and introduced new rules for international students in 2024.

Here are the changes in Canadian student visa rules (2024):

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, unveiled today a set of Canada’s new rules for students.

  • Starting January 1, 2024, as an international student, you must adhere to Canada’s new rules, particularly the increased cost of living. This adjustment is a part of Canada’s new policy to prepare you to study efficiently.
  • As per Canada’s new GIC rule, the GIC amount for non-SDS visas has increased from $10,000 to $20,635, representing 75% of LICO in 2024.

This strategic move ensures that international students arriving in Canada have sufficient funds to support themselves and study in Canada. There is a collective responsibility to ensure that students are supported at every step when coming to Canada.

  • Ahead of September 2024, all universities must offer ample student support to international students as part of the academic experience.

Minister Miller also provided updates on three temporary policies affecting international students, a continuation of Canada’s adaptability during these times:

  • Extending the exemption from the 20-hour-per-week off-campus work limit until April 30, 2024.
  • The continuation of the facilitative measure allows students to count online study time towards a post-graduation work permit, applicable to those starting a study program before September 1, 2024.
  • The temporary policy providing an additional 18-month work permit to post-graduation work permit holders will not be extended further beyond December 31, 2023.

Conclusion

In summary, Canada remains a sought-after destination for Indian students, offering top-notch education, affordable fees, and post-graduation work opportunities.

However, starting January 1, 2024, new regulations include an increased GIC amount and heightened university support. Temporary policies, such as extending off-campus work limits, aim to adapt to current circumstances.

Prospective students should stay informed to navigate these changes effectively for a successful academic journey in Canada.
